Bucket List: A Dad, A Daughter, and Disney

At Republic, our goal is to unlock new remarkable value for our members every day. On our best days, we get to hear from them and how THEY have unlocked remarkable value in their own lives. A lot of that comes down to how they save and budget their money and the types of things they put that money towards.

One of Lilith’s favorite Disney princesses, Cinderella. Picture taken on Shawn’s Moto X (2nd Gen.).

Member Shawn K. is a great example of this. He came in to our office back in May, 2014 when we hosted the My Republic Story. He is an incredibly hard-working dad who lives right here in Raleigh, NC with his wife and spirited 5-year-old daughter, who he says could be dressed in an X-Men costume one day and a princess dress the next (totally my life when I was her age).

How has Shawn unlocked remarkable value in his life? Every month, he and his wife transfer a certain amount of money over to a separate account, “one aspect was certainly the money that we saved by switching from Verizon,” which he told us was about $110 saved every month on our service. Eighteen months later, they were able to take their daughter, Lilith, on the greatest trip of her life- Disney World (queue the tears).

If you’ve ever been to Disney World, you know how it goes: The rides, the pictures, the shows. But the experience can be so different from one person to the next. Shawn said, “My favorite part of the trip was getting to do something I had never done before and being able to relax with the family.” I asked him how a trip like that with all of the craziness could be relaxing. His response was: “I got to experience Disney through my daughter, that was pretty special.”

Now, I’ve been to Disney, but not since the world decided to make everything “app-friendly”. Shawn was telling me all about the apps that he used on his trip, like My Disney Experience. Through this app, he received 3 “fast passes” that let you go to the front of the line, he could plan out which rides he wanted to use the fast passes for based on wait times, and he could view crowd traffic for the day, or find a restaurant nearby.

“We know two little princesses who are going to Disney World!” -Facebook post, December 2012

Shawn and his wife used their phones (both have 2nd Gen. Moto X’s) to take all the pictures on their trip, including some great photos with Disney Princesses (Cinderella is the decided favorite) and other characters.

Shawn is not the only one that we’ve been able to share this experience with. You may remember Lois Smith from a couple years ago from our “If I had $1,000 right now” contest. She took her two incredibly cute daughters princesses to Disney with her winnings. We love being a part of something bigger than just your smartphone service, and really enjoy seeing the ways that you live smarter and save more.

These families unlocked remarkable value by providing their daughter(s) with the experience that every child dreams of. How do you and your family unlock remarkable value in your lives?  What’s on your bucket list? How can we help!?
